Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tallow and What Are the Benefits of Using it?

Tallow is rendered fat from cows. Traditionally, leaf fat (“Suet” or fat surrounding the kidney) is used to make tallow. Beef tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D3, E, and K2. It is also rich in vitamins B1, B4, and B12; all of which are beneficial to healthy skin. Tallow does not clog pores, as compared to many harsh chemical-based skincare products. For many years, tallow has been used as an effective skin hydrator and protector due to its natural anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties.

How is Wagyu Tallow Different From Grass-Fed & Finished Cows Tallow?

The words “Grass-Fed & Finished” is inevitably appealing when you’re just getting started on organic, natural skincare. However, it’s important for consumers to understand that this term is merely a technique used by farmers/ranchers to ensure cattle are (1) lean by (2) grazing, and (3) low in operational costs because ‘finishing’ cattle in other methods are costly.

Feeding cattle with grass or grain has little to no impact on the tallow’s quality, benefits, or vitamin contents. The true differentiator in these benefits including Omega 3 and Omega 6 contents, Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), fat-soluble vitamins, and related vitamins from beef tallow comes down to the cattle breeds. But most tallow producers won’t tell you that because it is cheaper and easier for them to source “any cows” suet through local butcher shops or small family ranches.

The cost of raising a Wagyu cattle is 63% more expensive than any other cattle breeds and it takes true expertise to maintain a sustainable Wagyu cattle business, especially outside of Japan (where Wagyu first originated and most prominent). That said, the price of Wagyu suet per pound (similar to a Wagyu steak) will be more expensive.

The Wagyu cattle is known for its “health fats” despite being more fatty compared to its peers. Countless of studies have shown that Wagyu consist of 300% more mono-saturated (good) fat, is higher in Omega 3 and Omega 6 content which is essential for skin elasticity, and is also scientifically proven to be richer in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K as well as other vitamins B1, B4, and B12. Thus, making the Wagyu fat an overall healthier choice for both consumption and skincare. Adding to that, Wagyu fat contains 30% more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) than other beef fat, which is crucial to younger, healthier looking skin.
